Grant Park and the Serra Cross
The classic quick win: Grant Park, on the hillside directly above downtown, is crowned by the Serra Cross and delivers sweeping views of the city, the pier and the Channel Islands. You can drive to the top or hike up from the mission; sunset here is a Ventura ritual.
Ventura Botanical Gardens
Right below Grant Park, the Ventura Botanical Gardens climb the same hillside with switchback trails through Mediterranean-climate plant collections and, again, terrific coastal views — a manageable workout with a payoff at the top.
Harmon Canyon Preserve
The county’s newest gem, Harmon Canyon Preserve opened to the public in 2020 — roughly 2,100 acres of oak-dotted canyon and ridgeline on the city’s east side, with miles of trails for hiking, trail running and mountain biking, and no entrance fee. It has quickly become a local favorite.
Arroyo Verde and the Ventura River Trail
For something gentler, Arroyo Verde Park offers shaded loop trails in a foothill canyon, while the paved Ventura River Trail and adjoining Ojai Valley Trail run flat for miles — ideal for walking, biking or jogging with the family.
