Which School District Is My Westlake Village Address In?

Because Westlake Village was master-planned as one community across a county line that already existed. When the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company bought the old Albertson Ranch in 1963 and A.C. Martin & Associates drew up the “city in the country,” the plan simply ignored the LA–Ventura boundary running through the middle of the property — the lake itself straddles it.

Government caught up in two pieces. The Ventura County portion was annexed into the City of Thousand Oaks (1968–72), so those homes joined Thousand Oaks’ school system, today’s Conejo Valley Unified. The Los Angeles County portion incorporated as its own city in 1981 — the City of Westlake Village — inside Las Virgenes Unified.

Westlake High School sits on the Thousand Oaks side of the line and belongs to CVUSD. Students who live in the actual City of Westlake Village attend Agoura High School, about ten minutes up Kanan Road. Families relocating from out of the area routinely buy “in Westlake Village for Westlake High” and discover the mismatch after the fact — or the reverse: they assume a Thousand Oaks address means Thousand Oaks High, when many of those addresses feed Westlake High.

Both are excellent schools, so this is rarely a story with a bad ending — but if your family has its heart set on one campus, the county line is the first thing to check, before the kitchen, before the yard.

Westlake Village addresses use ZIP codes 91361 and 91362 — and both ZIPs cross the county line. There are 91361 homes in LVUSD and 91361 homes in CVUSD; same for 91362 (North Ranch, for example, is 91362 with Westlake Village addresses, yet it’s in Thousand Oaks and feeds Westlake High). ZIP codes are postal delivery routes, not school boundaries, and in this community the two have nothing to do with each other.

Broadly: neighborhoods west and north of the lake — First Neighborhood, Three Springs, North Ranch, Westlake Hills — are on the Ventura County side and feed CVUSD and Westlake High. Neighborhoods on the east side of the line — the City of Westlake Village proper, including areas off Lindero Canyon Road, Agoura Road, and Triunfo Canyon Road — are LVUSD and feed Agoura High.

Then come the exceptions. The boundary crosses Westlake Lake itself, so lakefront streets — the Island, the Shores area — sit closer to the line than almost anywhere in the community, and neighbors a few hundred yards apart can be in different counties, different cities, and different districts. Even longtime locals get individual streets wrong. This is precisely where I’d rather look up the parcel than have you guess.

Three ways, in order of reliability. First, both districts publish school locators — the two tools above are the districts’ own, and they’re the final word. Second, the Los Angeles County GIS viewer will show you whether a parcel is inside the City of Westlake Village at all. One more nuance worth knowing: both districts allow intra-district transfer applications when a school has space, and CVUSD in particular has a school-choice window each year. So the boundary sets your default, not always your destiny — but waitlists at the most sought-after campuses are real, and no one should buy a home counting on a transfer.

Neighboring communities keep it simpler. Agoura Hills is entirely LVUSD — same feeder pattern as the City of Westlake Village, ending at Agoura High. Oak Park has its own small, high-performing district, Oak Park Unified (OPUSD), which broke away from Simi Valley’s district in 1977 and covers Oak Park alone — one of the main reasons families target that community specifically.
