Living in Chatsworth

About Chatsworth

Chatsworth was settled in the 1880s along the old stage road through the Santa Susana Pass and named after the Chatsworth House estate in England. Its rocky landscape made it a location for hundreds of westerns filmed at the Iverson Movie Ranch, and the Stoney Point and Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park outcrops remain the neighborhood’s landmarks.

The neighborhood is bounded by the Santa Susana Mountains on the north, the Simi Hills and Ventura County line on the west, Porter Ranch and Northridge on the east and West Hills and Canoga Park on the south. The Chatsworth Reservoir occupies the south-west corner, and the Metrolink and Amtrak station on Lassen Street is a hub for the area.

Older Chatsworth, south of Devonshire Street, has ranch houses from the 1950s to 1970s on standard lots, while the streets to the north and west keep larger horse-zoned parcels, some of an acre or more, that are rare elsewhere in the city. The hillside subdivisions built from the 1980s onward along the north and west edges hold larger two-story homes, several in gated communities with views across the Valley.

Condos and townhomes cluster along Devonshire Street, Topanga Canyon Boulevard and near the train station, and provide the lower-priced entry into the neighborhood.
