Where Liberty Canyon is
The history of Liberty Canyon: how the tract was built
Agoura Hills incorporated in 1982, but the tracts along the freeway were laid out and built through the 1960s and 1970s when the area was unincorporated Los Angeles County, and the names on the record maps and in the MLS are the names the builders used at the time.
Liberty Canyon was one of the first parts of the Agoura area to be subdivided for tract houses, with the earliest record maps and houses dating from the mid-1960s on the streets nearest the freeway, and later tracts filling in through the 1970s and 1980s up the canyon; the street names commemorating the Revolution were given by the original developer. The developers are not confirmed in any source Gary Jacobs has been able to verify. The county records show about 321 detached houses across the tracts, with the Liberty Canyon Townhomes and the Rondell condominiums as separate communities alongside.
Liberty Canyon homes: floor plans, sizes and lots
The record spans the eras. At the top, $1,863,000 on Patrick Henry Place in September 2025 for a 2,979-square-foot four-bedroom from 1989 on a quarter acre, and $1,375,000 on Freetown Lane in September 2025 for an 1,887-square-foot four-bedroom from 1985. At the bottom, $855,000 on Patrick Henry Place in June 2020 for a 2,016-square-foot three-bedroom from 1972 on one level, and $466,500 on Yankee Drive in August 2020 for a 1,088-square-foot two-bedroom townhome-style unit from 1973. Nine of the thirteen sales are four-bedrooms, and four of the thirteen are single story.
No plan sheet for Liberty Canyon is in the Conejo Simi Moorpark Association of Realtors archive that this guide series draws on, so there is no drawing to reproduce. The sale record shows homes of 1,088 to 2,979 square feet, median 1,887, with four bedrooms in nine of the thirteen, three in three, two in one, and four of the thirteen recorded sales are single story.
Liberty Canyon streets and how the tract is laid out
Country Glen Road carries four of the thirteen sales, United Road three, Patrick Henry Place and Freetown Lane two each, and Yankee Drive and Jim Bowie Road one each. The 1960s tracts are on the flatter ground near the freeway and the 1980s tracts up the canyon toward the Calabasas line; the lots run from about 6,400 square feet to a quarter acre, with a few larger.
Why people move to Liberty Canyon
The first reason is the range: a 1960s three-bedroom under $900,000 and a 1989 four-bedroom near $1,900,000 in the same neighborhood, with the Las Virgenes schools for both. The second is the location, the closest part of Agoura Hills to Calabasas and the Commons. The third is the absence of an association on most streets, which leaves the remodel to the owner and the city.
Living in Liberty Canyon
The Liberty Canyon HOA: dues, rules and monthly costs
Listings report the fee at $360 a month and $390 a quarter. Most of the detached tracts in Liberty Canyon have no association, and the constraint on an owner is the city permit process. The sales that report a fee — $360 a month or $390 a quarter — are in the attached or planned sections along Country Glen Road and Yankee Drive, where the association maintains the greenbelts and landscaping.
What the association covers and what the CC&Rs restrict is not confirmed in any source Gary Jacobs has been able to verify. Take the budget, the reserve study, the insurance certificate and the CC&Rs from the seller’s disclosure package, read the minutes for any special assessment or litigation, and confirm the current fee with the manager before removing a contingency.

Parks, trails and everyday life in Liberty Canyon
The Liberty Canyon trailheads and Malibu Creek State Park are a few minutes south, and the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing over the freeway at Liberty Canyon Road, under construction since 2022, is the neighborhood’s landmark. Agoura Hills runs on Kanan Road and the freeway: the shops and restaurants along Kanan Road and Agoura Road, the Whizin Market Square and the Twin Oaks center, Chumash Park and the city’s smaller parks, the Reyes Adobe Historical Site, and the Santa Monica Mountains trails at Cheseboro Canyon, Ladyface and Paramount Ranch a few minutes away. The Ventura Freeway runs through the middle of the city with interchanges at Kanan Road, Reyes Adobe Road, Chesebro Road and Liberty Canyon Road, and the drive to the Westside is the same forty minutes to ninety it is from anywhere in the Conejo Valley.
Commuting from Liberty Canyon: freeway access and the daily drive
The Liberty Canyon Road interchange is the easternmost in Agoura Hills and the closest to Calabasas. Errands are along Kanan Road or at the Commons in Calabasas; the Westside is forty minutes on a good day and ninety on a bad one.
Liberty Canyon home prices and the market
Liberty Canyon home prices and the current market
The figures in this section were current when this guide was last reviewed. The sale record in the facts above and the listings below are drawn live from the MLS each time the page loads.
In the two years through July 2026, five homes in the tract sold through the MLS, at prices from $1,120,000 to $1,375,000 and a median of $1,199,000. Over the longer record since June 2020, thirteen sales ran from $466,500 to $1,863,000 with a median of $1,225,000. The top of the record is $1,863,000 on Patrick Henry Place in September 2025 for a 2,979-square-foot four-bedroom; $1,375,000 on Freetown Lane in September 2025 for a 1,887-square-foot four-bedroom. The bottom is $855,000 on Patrick Henry Place in June 2020; $466,500 on Yankee Drive in August 2020. Single-story homes account for four of the thirteen sales, at a median of $1,190,000.
Thirteen sales in six years from $466,500 to $1,863,000 is several tracts rather than one market. What the record supports is a band from $850,000 to $1,100,000 for a 1960s or 1970s three-bedroom, $1,200,000 to $1,400,000 for a 1980s four-bedroom, and a top near $1,900,000 for the largest 1989 plans. Gary Jacobs keeps the full sale-by-sale history and can say where a given house sits in it.
Renting in Liberty Canyon: leases and rental prices
No lease is recorded in the MLS sources this guide draws on, so it does not quote a rent for Liberty Canyon; a current figure should come from the leasing agents who work these streets. Each association’s leasing rules — minimum terms, caps, pet rules — should be read before buying as an investment.
What inspectors find in Liberty Canyon homes
These homes date from 1965 to 1989, and the inspection carries the late-1960s list: original galvanised supply lines, original electrical panels of brands insurers now flag, single-pane aluminum windows where not replaced, original furnaces and ductwork, and roofs and sewer laterals at or past end of life. Slope lots add drainage and retaining-wall questions that a general inspector will flag but a geotechnical engineer should answer; pools of this age often have original equipment and plaster. None of this is unusual; all of it is negotiable if it is found before the contingency comes off rather than after.
Remodels that add value in Liberty Canyon
In a tract of this era the remodels that return their cost are the ones that bring a 1960s plan to the way people live now: the kitchen opened to the family room, the primary bath and closet, the floors and the glass, and, on the right lot, the pool. What does not return its cost is the addition that pushes the house past what the street will support; the record shows the top sales are renovated versions of the original plans on the better lots, not the biggest houses.

What to weigh before buying in Liberty Canyon
Start with the tract, because a 1965 house and a 1989 house on the same street carry different inspections. Then the freeway, which the northern streets hear. Then the wildlife crossing construction at Liberty Canyon Road, which will finish; ask the timeline. Then the specific lot, since the canyon streets are on slopes.
Who buys in Liberty Canyon
Families first, for the four-bedrooms and the schools. First-time buyers second, for the 1960s plans and the attached sections. Buyers who work toward Calabasas and the Valley third, for the easternmost interchange.
Buying or selling in Liberty Canyon: practical notes
For a buyer, read the plan off the square footage and the level, take the association package from the disclosures before the inspection, and brief the inspector for the 1960s. Pull the permit history of any addition, pool or converted garage from the county. Confirm the school assignment for the exact address.
For a seller, the comparable is the same plan and level, and the top of the record — $1,863,000 — is the renovated house on the better lot. Price to the record for the plan, say the association fee and the school assignment in the first lines of the listing, and let the condition argue for the top of the band.
