Westlake Village has 30 gated communities: seven behind 24-hour guard gates — Country Club Estates, Lake Sherwood, Sherwood Country Club, Sycamore Canyon Estates, Thistleberry, Trentwood and Westlake Island — and 23 behind code or card gates, from townhome communities with recent sales under $1 million to estate enclaves above $5 million. Most of them, including every gated tract in North Ranch and at Lake Sherwood, are outside the City of Westlake Village: they carry Westlake Village addresses but sit in the City of Thousand Oaks or unincorporated Ventura County. Only 6 are inside the city limits.

North Ranch has one guard gate, at Country Club Estates, and a string of smaller code-gated enclaves around North Ranch Country Club, from townhome communities at the east end to the new estates on Miller Ranch Drive. Outside North Ranch and Lake Sherwood, Westlake Village has 12 more gated communities around the lake and in the hills south of it. Two are guard-gated: Sycamore Canyon Estates, and Westlake Island, reached over its guarded bridge.
